    The Ignoble Onion

According to an old German cookbook, onions came from China to Babylon (now Iraq) and then to Greece and Rome. In the first century AD they found their way to Germany. At the end of the middle ages onions were widely distributed, but in the knights' castles of Germany they were considered unsophisticated because they stank and were not allowed. Only the unsophisticated ate onions back then.
